Ministry

Membership (commitment to Jesus Christ and to a church family) and Maturity (commitment to spiritual disciplines that will help each of us become more like Jesus Christ) are the foundation for Ministry. A vital, thriving ministry is a result of a vital, thriving relationship with Jesus Christ and with a church community. In Ephesians 4:11-12, Paul writes, "He is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ." We believe that every member is a minister -- that every person is shaped for a purpose. At Wilderness, we help you discover your SHAPE (spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences) and then we assist you in plugging into an existing ministry or creating a new one as the Holy Spirit leads. Once you have identified your SHAPE, you can better understand your ministry. Lay ministers are resourced, trained, equipped, and supported throughout the body of Wilderness.

Wilderness Community Church has many lay ministry teams.

Blanket Ministry

The Blanket Ministry was created to provide comfort to cancer patients as they receive chemotherapy. The organization that receives our blankets tell us how thankful their patients are to receive a blessed and prayed over blanket. It keeps them warm & comforted while they are receiving treatment.

You do not have to have any special skills to serve on this ministry and be a part of encouraging someone who is fighting cancer. No sew blanket kits can be purchased or you can buy fabric from any local fabric store. All you have to be able to do is cut, tie and pray. The best part is you can make these on your own or as a small group activity. It doesn't take much time to be a part of touching and encouraging someone. Because we deliver each month, we are in a state of perpetual need for blankets. Consider making one to two each month to help support this ministry.

Completed blankets can be turned in to the church office. Deliveries of blankets are made towards the end of each month. If you have any questions about this ministry, contact the main office 540-972-8808.

Counters Ministry

Our Counters Team helps with an administrative function for the church. Each Sunday the Counters are responsible for collecting and counting the weekly offering. This occurs after each service. After the 10:30 service, there is a 40 minute task of recording the monetary gifts to the church. We are also responsible to count, record and deposit any funds collected during special events or services held by the church.

You do not have to love math or be an accountant to serve on this ministry! We will train you and be there to lend a hand. We also work with your schedule so that you rotate Sundays and are not asked to serve every Sunday. If you are interested in joining the Counters, contact Stephanie Oliver or the main office

Compassion Ministry

Our Compassion Team provides support for individuals and families in our church going through difficult times. Members of the team send cards or touch base with those that we know are in crisis. They reach out to members who are in or have recently been in the hospital, those who have lost a loved one or those who have some other difficult set of circumstances. Some of the duties the Compassion Team perform are:

  • Coordinates meal deliveries, if needed
  • Plans home visits with those that are house-bound for a bit
  • Will make hospital visits
  • Coordinates set up and serving of meals for families and guests immediately following a funeral or memorial service

This team is the heart of the church! If you love people or want to bless others while they are most vulnerable, this is the ministry for you.  For more information, contact the Team Lead, Margene Simms or the main office

Decorating Team Ministry

He created the four seasons with changing colors and landscapes, with each having its own magnificent beauty. God instilled in us a love of beauty, as well. It is our desire to follow God's lead and create an atmosphere of beauty throughout our church. Our goal is to make a beautiful, lasting impression for everyone who comes through our doors.

The Decorating Team meets periodically to change or create seasonal arrangements in the Welcome Center and on the stage in Celebration Hall. We also decorate for special occasions, like Christmas, Easter and help decorate and set-up for special services planned throughout the year.

If you would like to be involved in a ministry that creates beauty, enjoys working together and has fun with each other, we would love for you to join our team. If you don't have experience, we are happy to teach and guide you!  For more information, please contact our Team Leader, Bea Guillette or the main office
